The perfect figures and measurements demanded by fashion catwalks mean that the vast majority of the population do not fit the stereotype and feel ... frustration and indifference towards the industry. However, in attempt to break with these ideas and demonstrate that fashion, beauty and design do not have to be incompatible with age, a few weeks ago a group of around 50 people over the age of 60 from Torrox, including both men and women, took part in their first ever fashion show in which they were the models.
The event attracted an audience of around six hundred people, while a total of 41 women and seven men took to the catwalk, all of them regulars at the day centre in the town centre. The event took place in La Granja sports centre and was organised by the Department of Social Affairs at the local Town Hall, as a new activity on the programme for the III Torrox Seniors' Week.
«It has been a great success and all the participants were very satisfied, because it has served as a great boost to the motivation and spirits of a generation that, despite being retired, is still totally able and independent», considered the councillor responsible for Social Welfare at Torrox Town Hall, Manuel Martín (PP). He explained that the original idea to stage the senior fashion show in the town came after a visit to a similar event that is held every year in the city of Malaga.
«When we suggested it, the support we received was magnificent and very enthusiastic», commented the councillor, who added that the senior citizens had been practising modelling on a catwalk for more than a month and a half. «On the day everything went splendidly, bearing in mind that we contracted a very professional firm, Factoría Bellezas, who are responsible for organising the Miss and Mister Malaga contests», continued Manuel Martín.
The senior citizens taking part in the fashion show, which lasted for just over an hour, modelled garments, make-up and hairstyles from different firms and establishments: El Abanico de Vélez Trajes de Flamenca, C&A, La Gioconda, DNI Image & Make Up, La Creación de Alta Costura, Peluquería Lourdes, Peluquería Bellísima, La Peluquería, Peluquería Marta and Peluquería Ana, to list them all.
«We hope to be able to repeat the senior citizens' fashion show next year with the same level of success», said the Social Welfare councillor, who explained that as part of the III Seniors' Week they also had stage plays put on by senior citizens, ballroom dancing classes, poetry and short story competitions, gastronomy tasting sessions and sports activities, such as petanque and country walks.
